Black Opiate is the unification of Karen Lam’s Opiate Pictures and Kate Kroll’s Black Moon Media. Together, Lam and Kroll have combined decades of experience with their commitment to crafting stories that explore the darker corners of human experience—whether through chilling, original fiction or gripping, real-life investigations.
Kate Kroll and Karen Lam first crossed paths in 2013 while working on the Discovery ID true crime series Very Bad Men, where Lam served as Showrunner and Kroll as Production Manager. Almost 10 years later, they reunited to produce the twisted dark comedy scripted feature, Armageddon Road. Their collaborative synergy is unparalleled, with each bringing a unique set of strengths that naturally complemented the other. This dynamic partnership laid the foundation for Black Opiate, a full-service production company capable of overseeing every stage of the filmmaking process—from initial concept development to final delivery. Together, they create a seamless blend of creativity, technical expertise, and industry experience, driving their shared vision forward in both narrative and unscripted content.
